Winter Warmth Underfoot With New Rugs

It isn’t really feasible to completely redecorate and refurnish a home seasonally but it is certainly true that you need to give a little thought to some small changes that will make your house more cosy when winter comes along. Cool wood and laminate floors are less tempting to walk on when it’s cold outside and although your home is probably nice and warm, there is a psychological block to walking on icy floors when you have just come in from chilly weather.

Keep your toes toasty

You wear proper footwear outside when it’s cold and wet, so it makes no sense to get cold feet when you come in and take your boots off. Buying a few rugs to scatter around will make it easier to keep your feet warm and the first thought when it comes to being warm and snug has to be a shaggy rug. Wool rugs are a great choice, but there is a whole range of shaggy rugs made in synthetic materials which do the job just as well, without the worries about upkeep and the higher cost. If you have a door that doesn’t fit very well at the bottom, a carpet runner butting up to the threshold can help cut the draughts, but be careful – there is a trip hazard associated with rugs near doors, so don’t take risks for the sake of cutting a cold draught; use a draught strip instead.

Bedroom floors need to be warm

No one likes getting out of bed in the morning but getting out onto an icy floor makes it so much worse. A washable shaggy rug by the bed so your toes can touch something warm first thing makes it much easier to get up and going when the alarm goes off – the range of colours in machine washable shaggy rugs for sale means that every bedroom can have something that sets the decor off to perfection. You probably won’t need a large rug to do the job and so you can afford to mix and match to give a great effect.

Warm up the room with colour

If your problem isn’t actual cold but a room that just looks chilly, introducing a spot of warmth with a contemporary rug in a warm shade is a quick and inexpensive way to make things less cold-looking. A splash of a hot red or a warm amber or tawny shade will make an instant difference and because you don’t have to choose too large a rug to get the effect, you can move it into another room or simply store it over the summer, ready to bring out again when the cold weather arrives. Using rugs to change the ambience of a room is so simple and can be done very cheaply – because the rug won’t get hard wear every day for years, you can afford to buy a bargain rug even for a busy floor.
